Hello Kitty Craze? More Like Herd Mentality

Source

The article mentions the S$126,000 black Hello Kitty bid on ebay. I don't think anybody with a functioning brain would pay for that, more like the seller was a victim of fake bidding. I did a search on ebay sorted by highest price first, I laughed at what was presented in front of me...

Ridiculous
Now let's sort by lowest price first...

Still ridiculous
The lowest price is S$12.50, the toy was originally priced at S$4.60 by McDonald's, it is now 171% more expensive, ultra-inflated pricing, but still, there are 9 bidders, it might even go higher since there's still about 2 days before the bid ends.

Look at this, S$155.50 with 3 bids...

Would you pay S$155.50 for a soft toy?
I wonder if the bidder will honor the deal since there are cheaper deals available.

Let's be realistic, there's really nothing attractive about this soft toy, obviously profiteers have a good reason, but why the heck then would everyone else queue for it? Ever notice when people starts queuing at a particular food stall, more people will follow, but you know the food there isn't really that awesome, I bet most people experienced this.

And when your at the pedestrian crossing, it's not green man, but when one person started crossing, everybody else follow, in some cases, they don't even look out for incoming traffic, they simply follow blindly.

Or when your at the train station, nobody is taking the lift for handicap people, but when one person moves towards there, everybody else follow.

Or when somebody did something not nice but nobody wants to speak up, but when one person speaks up, suddenly everybody started speaking up.

Very strange huh.

Foreign Spouse Support Group (FSSG) - Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants & Itinerant People (ACMI)

Source

FSSG was formed by ACMI on Jun 15 2013, and ACMI is a catholic organisation powered by volunteers and donations and their aim is to help foreigners in Singapore; yes, they also provide assistance to foreign spouse of Singaporeans.

First thing that came to my mind after I read the article was, do we need to convert to catholic before we get help? So I went to ACMI's website and saw this section,

ACMI TRAINING CENTRE COURSES & REGISTRATION (TERM 2) 2013
Submitted by acmi on 5 June, 2013 - 11:56
Our training centre centre provides skills training and re-integration courses for foreign domestic workers with valid work permits, regardless of nationality and religion.

Location: Blk A, 98 Hougang Ave 8, S’pore 538791
Phone No: 6284 8797 or email: tc@acmi.org.sg

So they are providing courses regardless of nationality and religion, so how much does it cost? So I read through their course brochure,

ACMI Course Fees

So the courses are around S$90 to S$100, there are also additional costs depending on what kind of course the participant enrolls in, and they are all 3 month courses, I think the pricing is affordable.

I also did a quick run-through of their 2012 annual report and found this,

Number of cases by group and nationality

Top issues

Seems like phone calls and cases for foreign spouses make up a large percentage, about 36.87% for 2012. And looking at the top issues, some of them are more likely to be faced by foreign spouses, looking at the "Seeking financial help" part reminds me that having a foreign spouse is expensive in the long run, especially housing and medical, and if you read this, you will know what I mean by medical is expensive.

I can't help but think that the other issues like seeking divorce, seeking custody of children, spousal violence is related to financial difficulty, but of course there could be other factors, but fact is, marrying a foreigner is certainly more expensive, you don't get any help from the government unless you have a Singapore baby.

Go ahead and try, but don't take it too seriously, if you get a low score it doesn't mean the end of the world, the website says that IQ can be improved, I think maybe lazy people would get low points, but it doesn't mean that they are stupid, some smart people are just lazy to think, and I know such people.

Going Well at The Gynaecologist

We went to see the gynae today, he said the pregnancy is looking very good, he did a ultrascan for my wife and I can see that the egg is much bigger now, it's about 8.5 weeks old and I can see the heartbeat, it's a white coloured patch and it's pulsating, I was happy at that moment when he said "very good".

Then the doctor arranged for us to see a blood doctor on 26 Jul, not really sure what it's for but no harm getting more checks, I just want everything to go well. Finally the doctor prescribed more Enoxaparin and that's about it, can go home.

Today's spending:
S$69.55 for repeat consultation under consultant.
S$105.90 for 7 days of LMWH; 14 syringes.

Degree Holder Earn S$1000 More, Maybe

Source

The poly grad is saying a degree holder earns S$1000 more, at least in the financial industry. Looking at my own salary, I think it don't just apply to financial, I'm in the IT line. If I didn't have a degree, my salary now would probably be S$2300, but I'm now drawing S$3300. But it really depends on which industry, which company and the company size, and if your working in a big company, a degree is a must have, and it makes a lot of difference in terms of salary, and it also helps a lot with promotion, but of course I'm not saying it's a sure win ticket, work performance is important too, can't expect the employer to employ only the paper. For small companies, I don't think they really care much about your qualification as long as you can solve their problems, but of course, don't expect a high salary.

I think it's good to think hard before going for that degree, and if money is not a problem, no harm having it, but if you are like me, coming from a low income family, having to pay for it if I want to have a degree, you better think hard. I knew my company takes paper qualification seriously, that's why I took a loan just to get it, in the end, it paid off. Fact is, if I don't have a degree, I'll probably be able to hit S$3000 a month by the year 2019, cold hard truth. But some people I know, they are not fully utilizing their degree, or worse, their degree didn't make any difference, might as well throw that S$30,000 or so into stocks, at least they'll get dividends. What I'm trying to say is, if you are sure it will help you, then go for it, don't do a paper chase for nothing, or you could end up poorer for nothing.

I heard of all kinds of reasons for people going for a degree, most are good, some are really stupid. I heard of this guy going for a degree because his girlfriend is a degree holder, all for the sake of wanting to feel equal, it's like spending money on ego.

And this other guy, going for a business degree because he wants to start a business, in the end, no business, no job, ended up helping out at his parents place. Well, if he would invest those money he wasted on his degree, he'll probably have a small business by now.

One more guy, took a degree, can't stay on any job for long, he runs an association though, earns some membership fees but it's really not much, I think if he spent those degree money on expanding his association, he would probably earn so much more by now, probably would be running a private limited instead.

The list just goes on and on, if you want to get a degree, first ask yourself this question, can you earn back that money using your degree? If no, forget it, unless money is not a problem to you.

Semb Corp Industries Lingered at S$4.8x

I was thinking maybe it would go down to S$4.7x, well it did but the lowest was S$4.79. Then something else caught my eye, I saw SATS at S$3.11, was thinking maybe I should get 1 lot since they are going to give out a S$100 dividend in Aug 2013, and I was busy at work, came back and bam, S$3.20, what the heck. Anyway, the federal stimulus thing is really annoying, I think the fed people wanted to stop the stimulus because the US economy is improving, it's like taking life support off a person who no longer needs it, which sounds like a good idea, but it's a bad idea to the stock market so that's why most investors reacted negatively to that and caused most markets to tumble.

I don't know why but I keep getting the feeling that it's mostly american investors that are selling off stocks, I think by the time they finish with their selling, it would be a good time to buy, which I don't know when. I'll see how, I have the cash now, I can take my own sweet time to observe, no hurry.

But if Semb Corp can reach 4.7, I'll buy, or SATS at 3, or Sheng Siong below 6.5, and SPH seems good too, if SPH can reach 4, I would buy, probably would since it's on a downtrend.

Should I Buy Stocks With My Spare Cash Now?

Nowadays the market seems to always close low, seems like a good chance to buy, I am especially looking at Semb Corp Industries, since I bought 1 lot at S$5.15 earlier, it's been devaluing and today it close at S$4.80, seems like a good chance to average down. I think I can spare S$5000, maybe I should start queuing tomorrow, maybe aim at S$4.70.

Got a Great Bonus and Increment

I was expecting at most 2 months of bonus and 3% salary increment, and I got 3.2 months of bonus and 5.4% increment instead. Our company had a good financial year, and I think it's really nice of them to give back to employees. I also think it's nice of them to answer the government's call to increase employees salary, although I don't really fall under the low-income bracket, but I have my wife dependent on me, furthermore she's now pregnant, and she's a foreigner so everything is going to be very costly. I was still worrying about the coming medical bills so this big "ang pao" is really going to help. Finally a load off my mind, I think I can focus more on my job, it's not easy having to worry about things at work and at home.

And since I have 1.2 months extra, probably see what stock I can get with it, always invest the extra cash!

Indonesia Says Singapore Behaving Like a Child Over Haze

I woke up this morning and it's back, checked the PSI reading and it's 292. Yesterday night was ok, back to the 100 mark, wonder what happened this morning while I was asleep. I checked the news and saw this article heading that can seriously piss off any Singaporean.

Source

Indonesia says S'pore 'behaving like a child' over haze

"Singapore should not be behaving like a child and making all this noise," Agung Laksono, the minister who is coordinating Indonesia's response to the haze crisis, told reporters in Jakarta.

"This is not what the Indonesian nation wants, it is because of nature." The minister for people's welfare also said Jakarta would reject any offer of financial aid from Singapore unless it was a large amount.

"Unless (Singapore) wants to give us a large amount, we won't consider accepting it," he said. "If it is only half a million, or one million dollars, we don't need that. We would rather use our own national budget."

Laksono said investigations were under way to find out which company was responsible for the haze.

"There are Indonesian, Singaporean and Malaysian companies there," he said, echoing previous comments from officials in Jakarta seeking to shift the blame away from solely Indonesian firms.

Now who is behaving like a child, more like a naughty child who refuse to listen. This Agung, more like Ah Gong, told reporters in Jakarta, yeah, he was in Jakarta, far far away from all the smoke, like 880KM away, of course it's easy for him to say. Somebody should tell him that we are IN THE SMOKE, that's why we are f*cking complaining. What the heck.

Jakarta is about 880KM away from Singapore, safe from the haze
Oh and now it's because of nature, so the forest started the fire? The palms started to burn themselves? And their sense of dignity is truly worthless, if they truly don't need any financial aid, then any amount should be pointless to them, why even bother saying small or large amount, and only accepting large amount, how does that even make any sense?

And after weeks of burning, they are still underway to find out which company, read properly, he said company, really, how long does it take to find a registered company in their own place? Let us do it, we can do it in one day. Come on, stop lying, your not doing anything.

And this Ah Gong is still trying to differentiate between Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia companies, what's the point? To save face, but does that solve the haze problem? Doesn't take an adult to know that, so, who's behaving like a child? It's really not an issue to us, no matter which company which nationality, they are all in THEIR F*CKING JURISDICTION, and it's THEIR F*CKING CALL to do something, well unless they allow us to send in our troops, I really don't mind being recalled to go there and hunt down those f*ckers who keep burning things.

Hey everybody, come look at this idiot!

How did such an idiot even get to that position, I think any of our JC or Poly student can do better.

Didn't Get Any Notice to Pay Income Tax

I remember last year around the month of May, I received a notice to make payment for income tax but this year, it's already June and I haven't got any notice. I just logged into mytax.iras.gov.sg and I can see that my income tax is S$0.00, which is good. Last year I paid about S$117 or S$107, can't remember. It was annoying because I already paid so much GST, transport hikes, price inflation of goods, just about the price of everything went up last year.

I wish my salary can grow as fast as our inflation but it will never happen, never ever, that's why everybody is complaining. I think the biggest inflation is at housing and cars. Now that they have changed the loan rules, cars have suddenly become unaffordable for many people, but I think it's ok because Singapore is not a big place, it's very possible to get around without a car, but note that it's not because our public transport system is awesome, it's simply because Singapore is tiny. If you put our kind of standard on a bigger place, I can tell you our system will fail without doubt, you know why? Management fail. Our style of management is "wait for problem to appear then try to solve", there is no such thing as contingency planning, everything is last minute.

Sigh, what a boring night.

Too Hazy, No Mood to Post...

Sigh, when will it ever end... at first it's still kind of interesting, we haven't got any big thing going on for a while so the record-breaking haze was really quite fresh, but it gets really irritating fast, my eyes feel so dry, I had to try to breathe as little as possible, maybe a mask would help but still it hurts my eyes. At least rain a bit...

Singapore Urged Indonesia to Provide Company Names That Allow Slash-And-Burn Farming

Yesterday I read on a blog or Facebook post, can't remember where but it was saying that Indonesia was blaming Singapore and Malaysia for the haze, they were saying that it was companies from both countries which started the fires due to slash-and-burn practice in farming. The following news seems to prove what I read was right because I thought it was ridiculous to blame other countries for fires in their own country, I thought it was just another troll post because it sounds so stupid.

Singapore's worst air pollution sparks tension

Updated
2013-06-19 16:53:36

Singapore's worst air pollution in 16 years sparked diplomatic tension on Tuesday, as the city-state urged Indonesia to provide data on company names and concession maps to enable it to act against plantation firms that allow slash-and-burn farming.

Don't you think it's stupid? Even if it was companies from other countries which started the fires, they are still within Indonesia's legislation, am I right? That means, Indonesia should enforce their laws on these companies and not wait until everything blows out of proportion, which is what is happening right now. but it seems like they don't give a damn, and not as if their citizens are unaffected, in fact, they are hit harder than us, some places were reporting 400 PSI, you can just google "haze" and you'll get tons of results.

Just what is the world is their government thinking? Mind-boggling.

PSI Reading Flew Through The Roof!

What the heck! 290! A bicycle almost ran into me when I was walking home just now, vision is poor, my eyes felt dry and irritated, I think everyone out there feels the same. Oh no... I am very curious what is going on in Sumatra, for such a high reading, what exactly is the damage? Let's see if I can find anything...

I managed to find this satelite image from Meteorological Service Singapore website, it was taken on 19 Jun 2013, 07:52 UTC, which is Singapore time 15:52.

Assuming it's a thermal image, the red spots should be what they call "Hot Spots", which also means those are really hot places; red is hottest, orange second, then yellow and so forth. And the orange-yellowish patch blanketing Singapore and almost reaching Malacca should be the haze. Great, so when is Indonesia going to "make rain"?

The Haze Seems to Have Weakened

But when is it going to go away completely? The reading tonight looks okay, but seems to be increasing, and that irritating smell is still lingering everywhere, I had to hold my breath several times when I was walking home just now. My wife is also developing phlegm, I think she might get sick sooner or later.

I'm wondering when they are burning the forest, do they ever think of the impact, they have got such a huge land area, so much forestation, obviously there's going to be a hell lot of smoke if there's a fire, and where is all that smoke going to go? I think it's going to contribute to a bigger hole in the OUR ozone layer, and who's going to be responsible for that? But, from what I know, Singapore's foreign ministry has been telling Indonesia of our concern, has been offering assistance but they simply refuse to stop the burning, and I remember there was once when their minister proudly rejected our offer of help.

Oh I managed to find that article,

Govt Declines Singapore Help on Haze

By webadmin on 6:57 am September 15, 2011.

Fidelis E. Satriastanti

Though heavy haze continues to blanket parts of western Indonesia, the government said on Wednesday that things were under control and it did not need help from other countries.

Singapore, which falls victim to Indonesia’s annual haze problem, has offered to help put out forest fires. However, the deputy minister for environmental damage control and climate change, Arif Yuwono, said the government was capable of resolving the matter on its own.

Singapore Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishan told Channel NewsAsia that her country had offered to send aircraft to help Indonesia extinguish forest fires, which threaten to cast a pall over the city-state’s glitzy Formula 1 night race next week.

“We have a team on standby to help with putting out fires or even with cloud seeding, as well as technical assistance. It depends on whether the Indonesians request or require our assistance,” Balakrishan said.

Arif told the Jakarta Globe his ministry had yet to receive any formal offers, but no help needed.

“We don’t need any help [from foreign countries] because we already have our own standard procedures for handling disasters. The forest fires are now being handled by the BNPB [National Disaster Mitigation Agency] through rain-making operations,” he said.

“We also hope that the fires will decrease once the rainy season begins.”

Arif added that accepting help from foreign countries was complicated because the president needed to declare a natural disaster emergency and approve any aid from other countries.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the BNPB, also said there was no threat.

“Indonesia still has many resources, so any foreign help will be accepted only if we cannot control the situation ,” he said.

The government this week began rain-making operations focused on South Sumatra because the province will host the South East Asia Games in November and because it has 971 designated hotspots.

“We have decided to focus on putting out fires in the areas near the Games. We are creating buffer zones around the venues,” Arif said.

He added that three CASA 212-200 aircraft were being used to implement the month-long rainmaking initiative, which started on Monday.

Sutopo also claimed that the impact of the smoke was still localized and it had not reached other countries like fires in 1998 did. However, Malaysian state news agency Bernama reported that the country’s Environment Minister Douglas Uggah Embas last week sent a letter to his Indonesian counterpart about hundreds of suspected fires on Sumatra.

The letter was sent as air quality on Friday dropped to a level deemed “unhealthy” in one area of Negeri Sembilan state, south of Kuala Lumpur.

Feel like laughing after reading it right? So what's going on? After almost 2 years, everything went out of control? So they still don't need any help? They still want to "make rain"? So what happened to their "many resources"? And I can't believe they'll only try to put out fires near the SEA Games, so let everywhere else burn? Localized? Hello, if it was localized, why the heck would Singapore bother offering help, why the heck would Malaysia send a letter to warn about "hundreds of suspected fires on Sumatra"? So what about this time? They going to say localized again? WTF, the haze comes EVERY FEW MONTHS ANNUALLY, come on, who are they trying to fool.

And I love this part, "Arif added that accepting help from foreign countries was complicated because the president needed to declare a natural disaster emergency and approve any aid from other countries.", yeah yeah, maybe they have too much land so it's okay to let a few hundreds to thousands of Kilometers Square of forest burn to nothing, they sure contribute a lot to this planet, maybe when the whole of Sumatra gets burned to nothing then they'll probably consider it a disaster.

Simply mind-boggling.

Markings at MRT Station Won't Work

Source

Maybe it will in other countries, but not in Singapore, and I can guarantee that. Most people here simply don't give a damn, when they want to go in, they WILL go in, and it's not like we don't already have markings, yeah maybe people will behave before the train arrives but when it does, look at those animals, hungry for seats or rushing to paradise, be it old, young, professional, blue-collar, the most disgusting are those well-dressed animals, some are even good looking women, just look at how they squeeze their asses into the train, unsightly.

But nowadays I do notice people forming queues at Raffles Place, starting to spread to City Hall and Tanjong Pagar, I have to say there are still people who are willing to do everything in an orderly manner, which is commendable, but there are always those few idiots who ruin the whole show, people queue up, these idiots walk into the middle like nobody's business.

Or look at our bus terminals, don't we have those railings to define the queue? Some people don't queue, they shamelessly cut right in. You see, the problem is not with the system, we have a system in place, but we also have idiots who don't adhere to the system, which makes everything pointless.

Well, the government did try to go the campaign route, for decades, but obviously it didn't work so well, people are still ungracious, this makes me think of Thailand, you know, people there are very automatic, you don't get people bumping into you, cutting your path, cutting the queue or refusing to give way, in fact, people there always give way to people, you can jaywalk and cars will stop for you, but here in Singapore, it's totally different, you will most likely get madly horned at, and it's such a shame that we need markings, rules, campaigns just to make people play nice and the worse thing is after so much effort, people are still so selfish.

Oh this morning I had a lady walking right into me and then glared at me, I was just standing there waiting for the green light to cross, not like I'm blocking the entire path, there's so much free space to my left and right and she had to walk right into me and gave me a GTFO look, what the fish? But it's all normal, I get this kind of nonsense on a daily basis, welcome to Singapore.

And yesterday, me and my wife were at Sheng Siong getting some groceries, I was lifting the basket and was going to place it on the counter and this guy cut right in with 2 packets of chicken, wow, f*cking awesome, sigh, but being such a nice person, I let him go first and he didn't even look at me, no thank you no nothing, sigh... I really can't remember the last time I met a nice stranger, people these days are simply too holed up in their own world. If anyone will read this, please, there's nothing wrong with our system, the problem is we have a bad culture, that's it.

Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) Reading Hits the Roof!

This morning when I went to work, I noticed that the haze seems slightly thicker than previous weeks and during lunch time, it got so much thicker. The worst part is when I left my office at around 6.15pm, I felt like I was in the movie "The Mist", the burnt smell in the air is unbearable, there's simply no where to hide.

When I reached home, I checked the PSI Reading and the result was quite shocking.

Look at the 8PM reading, 140! I better stay at home tonight, that kind of haze can kill people. But I keep thinking where in the world did all this smoke come from, did a Google search and found that the culprit is Indonesia, it's a yearly thing, ongoing underground fire keep starting new fire during dry season, and where did the first fire come from? Farmers burning forest to convert more areas for farming, it's a cheap and easy way to clear large areas, obviously, but it also produces a lot of pollution, just look at the skies, can you see anything? No? Then something is very wrong! I wonder why are they even allowed to continue this kind of practice, look at this article, why did their officials waste time with "persuading"? They broke the law, arrest them, if the haze can keep coming back every year, every few months, then obviously somebody didn't do their job.

I know, maybe they were trying to be nice to the farmers, maybe they are not aware of the kind of damage they are doing, but it's been going on for YEARS, the very first time I encountered the haze was in the 90s, come on, after such a long time, why don't they get it? I can tolerate a small haze, but this 140 thing is unacceptable. Furthermore, Malaysia is also affected, how can one country cause so much damage to other countries due to ignorance, or should I say negligence?

Update: More shock, it's now 152! Wow, they sure are having lots of fun right now...

Got a Good Performance Rating from My Superior

Our rating ranges from Poor, Average, Good, Very Good and Excellent and I managed to get Good for this year, and it's the same as last year. Good news is, last year I got 2.5 months performance bonus, which was above my expectation. Actually last year I was expecting a maximum of 2 months so 2.5 was really nice. I hope I can get 2.5 again as it will really help with paying for my wife's pregnancy.

Why Are Some People So Oblivious to Their Surroundings?

Why? Is it because they don't give a damn or they simply didn't notice or what, they are on drugs? I don't expect them to grow eyes on their back but is it that difficult to turn your head and take a glance? Just look at escalators, I thought it's a general consensus that if one is not moving, keep to the left and leave the right side free for people who wish to move on faster? Does it even make any sense when your the only one standing on the right and blocking the entire path? Or worse still, there exists some idiots who will stand right in the middle, put their hands on the handrails on both sides, what the heck?

And talking about escalators, those at MRT comes to my mind, those of you who have been to Tampines MRT station after office hours should know it's very crowded, when the train doors open, everybody will rush out to the escalators, some even sprint, now my question is, why the rush? I know maybe some of them are really in a rush to settle something, I can understand that but there are some that after rushing to the escalator, they take their own sweet time to stroll down, or worse still, they stop moving and block the way, you know, instead of keeping to the left, they stand on the right and block the entire path, you can see the whole line of people blocked by one person, what the heck, if this person would turn his/her head around and take a look at how many people he/she has blocked, maybe this person would feel ashamed.

Don't tell me that person is sick, or on medicine or whatnot, please, if this person can rush/sprint in front, I don't see why this same person cannot move down the escalator faster, or at least keep to the left. I've seen it many times, so much so that I focus on those who rush, and then I look at how they get down the escalator, I can tell you most just take their own sweet time, which tells me they actually rush just for the sake of rushing, just for the sake of getting in front, just for the sake of winning, truly f*cking pathetic.

Finally My Aircon is Fixed (I Hope!)

Yesterday those Gain City guys came again, did the welding thing, but this time,  they opened up the compressor and took out the mainboard, the guy said there's a leak inside, so he went on to plug it, he took more than an hour. After the servicing, it worked well yesterday night. Today when I came home, I was expecting the worse, I thought the aircon will probably stop working again and to my surprise, it's still alive! I hope it doesn't break down again...

This Gain City Really Cannot Make it

Yesterday they came to fix my aircon gas leak problem, we waited one month just for that, their customer service staff and their technician promised it'll all be fixed once and for all, guess what, yeah we did enjoy ONE night of cooling and tonight, it's not cold again. WOW.

So what are they going to say now, they came up with all sorts of excuse to delay the servicing and when the time comes, they didn't really fix it, I thought they said they will order spare part, yesterday they only did welding, what the heck?

If anyone reading this is thinking of buying from Gain City, well, we did enjoy coolness for almost two years, but unfortunately it had to break down, and when it breaks down, the after sales support felt like non-existent, yeah they do answer your calls, respond to your mail, but they just cannot fix the problem. So if you want to buy, you better pray hard it doesn't break down.

Now I'm going to look at the servicing agreement and see what I can use to file a complaint.

Update

After checking on the warranty, we have a 5 years warranty on electrical and mechanical parts, labor and transport, exclude servicing and remote control, and also a 3 year full warranty on installation which covers against poor worksmanship, so that means we are still covered.

Now the question is, let's say if everything was installed properly, how would there be a gas leak? My aircon was installed on 26 Jul 2011 and it failed on 11 May 2013, that's about 1 year and 9 months. As mentioned in my earlier aircon post, my colleague has been using Daikin (also installed by them) for 3 years, he never did any cleaning or whatnot and it runs fine.

What causes Aircon Gas Leak?
Your aircon shouldn't leak gas at all; if it was properly set up, gas will not leak even after 10-20 years!

Unknown to many people, air conditioners do not take up refrigerant (commonly known as Freon), as a car would take up oil. The truth is, under ideal conditions, changing or filling up of refrigerant is really not necessary. A low gas level means that in all likelihood, there is a small leakage somewhere in the system, which should be first repaired before re-topping with gas. Almost all recently produced air conditioners have connections that are welded to prevent leaks. Older units, on the other hand, have mechanically connected fittings which over the years, tend to be loosened by vibrations that then results in leakages, followed by air conditioning system failure.

Which air conditioner brand is better and causes fewer problems?
Although there are many brands of air conditioner in the market right now, they have similar function. Every brand has a few air conditioner models that they are good in. There is no particular brand that we can recommend which is better than the rest. One very important point to note is that the installation of the air condition plays an important role when it comes to having problem like water and gas leaking. With good installation, the occurrence of these problems can be kept at a minimal level.

Oh, and I just logged a case using their online booking system, and boy were they fast to call, bet when they saw it failed after just one night they panicked a bit, and they were really apologetic, and they said they will come down again on this Thursday, I'll see what they can do. One last chance for them, no more waiting, I didn't pay a few thousand dollars to use the aircon for 1 year and 9 months and then wait one full month for a servicing which didn't solve my problem.

Appointment at SGH O&G High Risk Clinic Again

Today we went back to the HRC and wow, there seems to be more and more people attending to our case. There were 5 doctors and 2 nurses, seems like a really big deal. Anyway, they did the usual thing, ask how my wife is, so I told them she's feeling nauseous all the time and the senior doctor said it's normal due to hormonal changes and it's a good sign. I also told them about the dark red blood that stained my wife's pantyliner, at first one of the nurses looked worried when I said it happened everyday and I tried to tell them it's not really a lot of blood, it's just one thick red line. I thought it's normal because I did a research on the internet and found that it happened to many pregnant women in their first trimester but I found it difficult to say it out, I mean the pantyliner and blood, just so weird.

So they quickly put my wife on the ultrascan, I think they did the usual electronic penis thing but I'm not sure as this time round, I was sitting outside the curtain since there were so many people inside. The scan took a while and the senior doctor went in to ask if it was viable, I think he was referring to whether the pregnancy was viable, and I was really glad when someone said yes, and they can detect another heartbeat. After the scan the doctor said that no matter what, I should make sure my wife gets the injection on time, and also, he will prescribe some medication for nausea and for stabilizing the pregnancy. Phew, so far so good.

After the consultation, we went for a blood test (Anti XA Assay), it was to test whether the Heparin injection dosage is sufficient. We also have an appointment on 28 Jun.

So today I paid,
S$202.27 for repeat consultation under senior consultant (79 before gst) and Anti XA Assay (110.04 before gst).
S$60.30 for:

  • 70 tablets of Pyridoxine HCL 10MG per tablet - 8.40 before gst.
  • 63 tablets of MetoCLOPramide 10MG per tablet - 7.56 before gst.
  • 28 tablets of Dydrogesterone 10MG per tablet - 38.92 before gst.
  • 30 tablets of Folic Acid 5MG per tablet - 1.50 before gst.

Why Do We Have Cash-Over-Valuation (COV)?

Because prior to the introduction of COV, sellers must sell according to valuation price, and this makes them unhappy when the valuation price doesn't match their expectation, so they resort to taking under-table money i.e. whoever willing to pay extra gets the deal. But such practice distorts data, it doesn't reflect actual selling price correctly so our government cannot tax correctly, or you can also say that they will earn lesser. Then some smart person decided to implement COV to stop all the under-table deals and as we know now, it works as intended.

COV has been around for a long time now, long enough to drastically bring up the prices of resale flats in Singapore, countless people have been buying and selling, so many change of hands, and with every change of hands, the price goes up, but some people may argue that there were also cases where flats were sold below or at valuation i.e. no COV. But how many such cases? Obviously it doesn't matter, just look at the current resale flat prices.

And speaking of buying and selling, people who bought at high prices naturally wish for the COV to stay, but don't be surprised when the same people start asking to remove COV because they sold their flat and wish to buy again. It's just a matter of which side your standing on, if your the buyer, of course you say scrap COV, but if your the seller, of course you say COV should stay, but while in the midst of doing business, people forget that public housing was meant to give citizens a place to call home.

Notice that I referred to buying and selling of HDB flat as doing business, because nowadays, a HDB flat is being called an asset. According to Robert Kiyosaki, an asset is something that brings money into your pocket, selling a flat fits the description but provided you have enough money to set aside for your CPF minimum sum, and you don't need to purchase housing while the market is hot, and even more so if you decide to rent it out instead.

For the government, it used to be easy for them to manage since they can simply say "willing buyer willing seller", and then pat their backside and walk away, but unfortunately for them, this laissez-faire style of management no longer works. More and more citizens are unhappy because of housing price, especially the younger generations, and these younger people are more daring to speak up thanks to their education, specifically their ability to access more information than the older generation. And also looking at the last election results, and the government actions that followed, they know that they cannot continue to turn a blind eye.

So the question is, what can the government do? If they scrap COV, they risk angering flat owners, and there sure are plenty of flat owners in Singapore, so this is definitely not workable. But if they leave it as it is, citizens will find it difficult to cough up the cash, especially younger people who wish to settle down, and young people generally have lesser cash savings. And those who have no choice but to go for resale, they will probably stretch their necks to pay for the COV, by borrowing from family, taking personal loans from banks, or worse, borrow from money-lenders.

I'm thinking why don't HDB offer a special loan, a COV Loan, at say 3% interest per annum, payable only in cash, with installment option, this will give people one more option to work with, and it gives HDB an extra stream of income.
